Social Studies Curriculum Writing

Our curriculum development is rooted in 21st-century skills, CRSE, and student engagement. We work closely with educators to create or redesign curricula with students’ needs at the forefront of the process.

Who this is for:

Schools

Organizations

Districts

Departments

Teachers

CreatED builds project-based, student-centered and -driven curricula for social studies education at the middle and high school level. If you are building a new course, changing up a unit in an existing course, or just looking for a couple of lessons, we can work with you to create something that fulfills your needs and engages your students. Curriculum writing can include game development, and can be paired with coaching to ease rollout. Let us know what you need, and we will work together to design something that works for you!

8th-grade student

“I really liked this history class. You varied everything with the way we learned, including games, documentaries, discussions, and so much more. Your class was very organized, but also very fun. I enjoyed your class, and I was never bored.”

8th-grade student

“This was by far the best year of history I've ever had and I've learned so much.”

12th-grade student

“I’ve loved a lot of my teachers and a lot of classes...but I’ve never enjoyed a class quite like I enjoyed this one. You are very easy to learn from. The activities you put together and the way you taught everything made wanting to do the work in your class and do it well a lot easier.”

Past Curriculum Projects

Educurious/Denver Public Schools

Subject: Civics

Focus Skills: Empathy, recognizing bias, creative problem-solving, synthesis, analysis, collaboration, communication

Grade Level: 11

In 2024, Denver Public Schools partnered with Educurious to write a project-based, semester-long civics course in alignment with Common Core standards and Colorado State Standards. The course considered the philosophy, foundations, structure, and policies of the U.S. government through the lens of current issues students care about, including wealth inequality, immigration, and the right to protest. The projects integrated into each unit all involved students taking civic action on a local level. Cody was the writer for this curriculum.

Teaching Matters/NYCDOE

Subject: Research

Focus Skills: Curiosity, recognizing bias, synthesis, analysis, communication

Grade Level: 8

In 2021, Teaching Matters partnered with the NYCDOE Department of Library Services to create a curriculum for a yearlong student-driven Inquiry project for NYC 8th graders. The Capstone Project centered on the mission of NYC school librarians to “prepare each one of our students to develop the skills and agency to be both critical consumers and creators of information as they navigate and succeed in their academic and personal lives” (Stripling, 2019). Cody, CreatED founder, was the lead writer for this curriculum.

Lapham’s Quarterly

Subject: World History

Focus Skills: Curiosity, synthesis, analysis

Grade Levels: 8-12

Lapham’s Quarterly, a thematic history magazine, sought to take their vast array of source materials and make it accessible for teachers and students in middle and high school classrooms. CreatED adapted sources and created a variety of teacher-facing guidance and student materials for the 2020 issue Epidemic.
